ERA Locks Design

A typical cylinder will need a central fixing hole used to fasten it in place in a door. The problem is there is 80% less metal in this area than there is in the back or front of the cylinder, making it easy for anyone to snap them easily. ERA’s designers have been able to take care of the weak area by changing the shape of the cylinder base, resulting in the stronger, safer cylinder locks recommended by our locksmiths in London.

What is the History of ERA?

Like a handful of other locks brands, ERA has its beginnings in Willenhall where it was founded in 1838. Ralph Morris, whose maternal family had been involved with the lock industry for 3 centuries, joined the firm in 1936. Mr Morris still had hope for the company even as he joined J.E. Reynolds when the company was all but obsolete. Later, in 1950, Mr Morris acquired the Reynolds family’s business and eventually started making cylinder night latches and padlocks.

After Ralph Morris, his sons, David and Peter, took control of the company and were later joined by Micheal Hunt, who was their brother-in-law. Hunt added more products to the existing range, including mortise locks and a range of window locks.

In 1986, Laird Group bought the company and in 1995, the Reynolds Company acquired Crompton Ltd. and Seal, a UK company which was at the time, a leading provider of electronic locks. Also in 1995, Laird took over Cego, a manufacturer of locking systems and handles for doors and windows, and in 1996, ERA started making an electronic lock.
